Welcome to the City of Harvard Brownfields Assessment Grant project website.
The City of Harvard has received $140,580 through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Brownfields Assessment Grant program to:
assess sites in Harvard with potential for hazardous substance contamination, and evaluate feasible cleanup alternatives.
The EPA's Brownfields Program empowers states, communities and other stakeholders in economic development to work together to assess, clean up and reuse Brownfields.
The primary sites to be assessed are the Harvard Courts (Northeast Harvard Residential Area) and the Central Business District in Downtown Harvard. Other sites may also be assessed.
The City is partnering with the Housing Development Corporation, and has hired HWS Consulting Group to conduct the environmental assessments.

1. What is the purpose of this project?
The purpose of this project is to assess areas designated for development/redevelopment for potential environmental concerns and to develop cleanup options and strategies (if necessary) to address any identified concerns.
2. What is the current risk to the public?
The City of Harvard is not aware of any current risks to the public. There are several properties in the area that preliminary records searches have indicated may be locations of environmental concerns such as underground storage tanks or historical usage of hazardous materials. Subject to further records review, these areas may be further investigated to determine what risks, if any, they may pose to the public in their current state as well as what might be expected during and after site development/redevelopment.
3. How will I be notified of potential hazards to me or my property?
Dependent upon the nature of risks, the City will notify the public of any known risks that become evident via direct and immediate communication, targeted mailings, or through public forums. Regardless of site conditions, the City will continue to inform the public and seek input through public meetings.
